Earning Your Shirt

At Heaton Stannington U14 Reds, we believe in complete transparency about how matchday decisions are made. Ami and I determine playing time based on what best serves the squad, and every player has a clear, fair path to earning their minutes through four core standards.

The Four Pillars of Earning Your Shirt

  • Attitude & Team Spirit: Squad unity always overrides individual ambition. We expect players to encourage their teammates, respect officials, and remain open to coaching. Players who embrace our #WeOnlyDoPositive ethos and lift the standard of the group make themselves indispensable.
  • Commitment & Attendance: Trust is built on consistency. Regular attendance at training, arriving on time, and communicating any absences well in advance shows respect for the squad. Earning matchday minutes starts on the training pitch during the week.
  • Work Rate & Fitness: We want players who give maximum effort in every drill, tackle, and recovery run. Utilizing the Hub’s nutrition and athlete development guides to maintain match fitness is expected. Effort is fully in the player’s control, and 100% application is the baseline requirement.
  • Ability & Tactical Application: Earning time on the pitch means actively trying to execute our Game Model. We look for players who commit to our passing game, are brave enough to build out from the back, and apply the lessons from our Positional Masterclasses rather than just relying on raw individual talent.

Squad Unity Over Individual Ambition

Football is a collective pursuit. There will be matches where tactical adjustments dictate a specific lineup, or moments where players must accept a different role for the benefit of the group. Playing time is never guaranteed simply by past performances; it is continuously earned through hard work, a team-first mentality, and a shared commitment to progressing forward together.
