The Reds’ Playbook: How We Play the 4-2-3-1
Our formation isnât just about positions on a pitchâitâs about togetherness. We attack as a team, we defend as a team, and we always support the player on the ball. Here is everything you need to know about how we play.
đ§ The 5 Golden Rules
Our 5 non-negotiables on matchdayThe Danger Zone = 2 Touches
In our own defensive third, we keep it simple. Control, pass, move. Maximum two touches. No dribbling into trouble.
The “Seesaw” Full-Backs
If the Right-Back sprints forward to attack, the Left-Back stays back. We never have both full-backs pushed high at the same time.
The 5+5 Rule
Whenever we attack, 5 players push forward to score, and 5 players lock the door behind them so we don’t get countered.
The 5-Second Hunt
If we lose the ball in the attacking half, the closest players hunt it down instantly for 5 seconds. If we donât win it back quickly, we drop back into our shape.
Play on the Turn
Midfielders and attackersâalways check your shoulder before the ball arrives so you can turn forward immediately.
đ Interactive Pitch
Tap a phase button or any shirt (#1â#11)Phase 1: Base 4-2-3-1 Shape
Notice how #6 (Anchor) and #8 (Connector) are staggeredânever flat! We stay connected from back to front.
The Anchor (6)
Stays a bit deeper. You are the safety net for the defense and must never stand in a flat horizontal line with the #8.
- â Drop in to give Centre-Backs a constant passing option
- â Check your shoulder before receiving so you can play clean
- â Sit in front of the CBs as part of our 5+5 safety net
â˝ Your Roles Made Simple
Clear jobs for every unit on the pitchGoalkeeper (1)
The SweeperYou are our 11th outfield player. Talk to your defense, sweep up balls played over the top, and stay calm when we build out from the back.
Centre-Backs (4 & 5)
The WallOne of you is the Aggressor (4) (steps up to win the ball), the other is the Cover (5) (sweeps up behind). Keep passes crisp and simple.
Full-Backs (2 & 3)
The FlyersYou provide our width. Remember the Seesaw Rule: if one of you overlaps the winger, the other tucks inside next to the Centre-Backs to form a back three.
Defensive Mids (6 & 8)
The PivotYou two must never stand in a flat line.
- The Anchor (6): Stays a bit deeper. You are the safety net for the defense.
- The Connector (8): Pushes a bit higher to link up with the attackers.
Attacking Mid (10)
The CreatorYou live in the “pockets” of space behind their midfield. Be ready to receive the ball on the turn and slide killer passes to our forwards.
Wingers (7 & 11)
The Inside ThreatsDon’t just hug the touchline! We want you to tuck inside into the middle. This creates a massive overload (4 of us vs. 3 of them) and leaves the whole wide lane open for our Full-Backs to sprint into. Once you’re in the final third, use your skillsâtake players on!
Striker (9)
The TargetYou lead the line. Hold the ball up so your teammates can run forward to help, make runs behind their defense, and be the first person to start the hunt when we lose the ball.
đ How We Move Together
In possession & out of possessionđ˘ When We Have the Ball (Building Up)
We play a passing game from the back. The Centre-Backs split wide, the Anchor (6) drops in to help, and we work the ball up the pitch together. Once we cross into their half, itâs all about creativityâbe brave, take players on, and shoot!
đĄď¸ When We Lose the Ball (The Safety Net)
Because we use the 5+5 Rule, even when we are attacking, our two Centre-Backs, our tucked-in Full-Back, and our two Defensive Midfielders are already in position to stop a counter-attack. You form a shield so the attackers can press with confidence.
